Most of the scooters going on the block date back to the 1960s and the oldest is a 1949 model, said auctioneer Marc Gaudet-Blavignac. A vintage restored 1951 Acma model is expected to fetch more than 10,000 Swiss francs , the auctioneers said. More than 16 million Vespas have been sold since the makers Piaggio launched the motor scooter, the first of its kind, in 1946 as cheap transportation for war-ravaged Italians. The scooter became a lifestyle icon in Europe in the 1950s and 1960s after it was featured in a number of popular movies.
